Alexander Urquiza was born on March 29th 1990 in Boston, Massachusetts at the Beth Israel Hospital. Alex was preceded in death by his father Humberto Ulises Urquiza. Alex is survived by his mother Delmis Urquiza, older brother Eric (Amanda) and younger sister Delmis Noemi. He leaves behind his nephews Benjamin, Charlie, David, Elijah and Damian and nieces Madelyn, and Lydia, and a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends. He passed away on February 3rd, 2023 at 11:07pm at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Alex was born with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and received this diagnosis at the age of 3 years old. From that point on, he fought to stay healthy and to stay alive. CF is a progressive disease that with time will lead to respiratory failure. At the time of his death, Alex was in Philadelphia fighting for his second chance at life—to just breathe. He underwent a double lung transplant surgery. He wanted this surgery to give him a new chance at a life with all of the children he left behind in his life. The last few few days of his life, Alex succumbed to multiple complications post transplant. More than anything, Alex didn’t want to suffer anymore, nor did he deserve to suffer another day on this earth. UPenn took a chance nobody else would for Alex to fight for a better quality of life. Thank you to all of the UPenn nurses, doctors, surgeons and staff for their tireless efforts to help Alex and to his MGH CF team who cared for him for almost 30 years.
Though this wasn’t the outcome he nor any of us expected or wanted, Alex left this earth fighting and a fighting chance is all he wanted. Alex was loved by many and will be missed for his million dollar smile, his wit, and his loving and funny personality by all who knew him. Rest in the sweetest of peace and breathe easy with Dad.
